Syphilis: Still Susceptible to Penicillin- Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. The organism may be acquired via sexual contact, blood transfusion, or during delivery from the mother to the fetus. If left untreated, the infection progresses through four distinct stages: primary, secondary, latent and tertiary. The aim of drug therapy is to completely eradicate Treponema pallidum from the body. The antibiotic of choice is penicillin, against which all other treatments are judged. It is the only recommended antibiotic for syphilis during pregnancy, neurosyphilis and congenital syphilis.
