Live or Inactive, Nasal or Injection, Quadrivalent or Trivalent: Understanding the Differences in Influenza Vaccines- There are basically two types of vaccines: Shots and nasal-spray. There are 3 types of shots: regular, high-dose and intradermal. In addition, we now have quadrivalent and trivalent vaccines for the influenza. Every year the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) offers recommendations and guidance for the use of influenza vaccines. This knowledge based activity with review the ACIP recommendations and guidance for the 2013-14 influenza season, compare and contrast the different types of vaccines and give pharmacists a better understanding of indications, contraindications, and precautions for each type of available influenza vaccine.
